At the I.G. Auschwitz construction site, along with forced laborers, there were also "completely ordinary employees" of subcontractors from many European countries. While at work, they encountered British and Soviet prisoners of war, as well as the prisoners of the Buna/Monowitz concentration camp.
The Union of Persecutees of the Nazi Regime – Association of Antifascists (Vereinigung der Verfolgten des Naziregimes – Bund der Antifaschistinnen und Antifaschisten; VVN-BdA) was created in 1947 from several associations of victims of the Nazi regime. Its members were predominantly political opponents of the Nazi regime, primarily communists and socialists. The VVN-BdA continues its activities as an antifascist organization to the present day.
