SS
In the mid-1920s, the Schutzstaffel, or SS ("protective echelon") was created to protect the NSDAP leaders. As of 1929, the head of the SS, known as the "Reichsführer SS," was Heinrich Himmler (1900–1945). The Nazi regime's policies of persecution and extermination were implemented largely by the SS.
