Chemically produced substitutes were intended to replace raw materials that had to be imported into the German Reich. The objective was to eliminate dependence on the world market. The Nazi regime began supporting research in this area in 1933. I.G. Farben manufactured substitutes for gasoline (Leuna) and natural rubber (Buna).
